Meeting notes and annoucements
Notes for 02_20_2019:

President Jim Bunker called the meeting to order.
Mike Lavor led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Joe Mahon gave the invocation.

Announcements:

  • Larry Rumans reported on the garage sale. He said set-up started about 5:45 and people started coming about 6:30.   He learned that customers didn’t want to pay much and then bargained for less; we ended up making $1,555.50.  Most of the items were sold but the remaining items were donated to Habitat for Humanity.  Larry thanked by name everyone who helped out.
  • Doug Woodard formally thanked Newt Johnson who wrote the grant for the freezer and refrigerator for Imago Dei Middle School.  Newt also shopped and bought the items and was there when they were installed. Doug introduced Cameron Taylor, head of the school along with Mark and Teresa, staff members with Americorps.  Mark was a Rotary Peace Fellow.  Cameron thanked us for the refrigerator and freezer donation which he said has already helped about two dozen families with fresh food to supplement their diets.
  • Doug also announced the Southern Arizona Day of Peace on April 6th.  Registration is available on the District 5500 website.
  • Jim asked for ideas for a location to hold the raffle drawing on April 18th.  We want to have food and invite guests.
  • Mike Kloehn said the GoFundMe page was progressing and close to getting finished.
  • Mike Lavor said all the high schools who have seniors eligible to apply for scholarships have the information they need and the 8th grade counselors  will have their information within the next few days.
The February 27th meeting will be held at
Leman Academy,  12255 N. La Canada Dr.,
          Oro ValleyAZ. 85755.      7:00-8:00 am.

Program

Program for 02-20-2019:

The speaker was Heather Enos, Deputy Principal Investigator of the OSIRIS-REx mission at the University of Arizona.  It is the 4th space mission she has participated in with the University.   The target of the mission is the asteroid Bennu to investigate and the goal is to collect samples in order to learn more about to origins of the solar system and also its relation to planet Earth. The spacecraft which is about the size of an SUV was launched in September, 2016 and arrived December 3rd.  Cameras started taking pictures on the approach and found hydrated minerals which means the basics of water formed during the early formation of the solar system.  It is in orbit 1.58 kilometers from Bennu, the closest orbit of any space body by a spacecraft.  Keeping the spacecraft in orbit is a challenge.  By the summer of 2020, a probe will start collecting samples of material; the spacecraft has a capacity of 2 kilos.  In March of 2021 it will start its return to Earth.
