Rotary Moment
Rotary Moment  -  Mo Brown

Mo told how he was born in Jamaica, his father was a truck driver and his mother worked in a cigar factory rolling cigars.  His father stressed education and made sure that all of his nine children received an education.  Mo graduated from university with a degree in electrical engineering.  Mo has lived in Tucson since 1970 but appreciates having been able to travel extensively to all continents except Australia and Antarctica.

Mo explained that Hugh Smith introduced him to Rotary in Tucson although his brother was a Rotarian in Jamaica.  He was most impressed and proud to be a member of Casas Adobes when he attended his first 8th Grade Honors Breakfast.  He is also proud of Rotary’s goal to eradicate polio since he remembers losing high school students in Jamaica to polio.  Mo’s goal is to remain in Rotary as long as possible.
Meeting notes and annoucements
Notes and announcements for 03_06_2019:

President Jim Bunker opened the meeting.
Tom Firth led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Larry Minich gave the invocation.
Jeff Shields introduced visitor Garrett Smith, Hugh Smith’s son.

  • Mike Lavor said information letters to middle schools and high schools have   gone out.  Leman Academy in Marana is being added to the 8th Grade Honor Program.  Mike passed around a sign-up sheet for volunteers to pick up the plaques at middle schools in order for names of honorees to be engraved.  Willis is in charge of the scholarship committee and will need 10 volunteers to read applications and select the recipients.
  • David Towne thanked all those who came to see and tour Leman Academy in Oro Valley last week.
  • Saturday, April 6th is Southern Arizona Day of Peace sponsored by Rotary District 5500 and Outward Bound.  Anyone interested in attending can find more information on the District 5500 website.
  • Eb Wilkinson awarded Paul Harris certificates, pins and coins to Drs. Larry Rumans and Bob Dzoiba for their contributions at least $1000 to the Rotary Foundation.  Eb reminded us of some of the beneficiaries of the Rotary Foundation, mainly the eradication of polio.
  • Laura Ziady will be collecting raffle money, ticket stubs and prizes for the next 3 weeks while Willis is away.
Program
Program for 03_06_2019

Greg Ayers, founder of Gap Ministries along with his wife, presented a program about how it started and the services it provides.  They were in the mid to late 30’s with successful careers in the financial sector when they decided they wanted to have a more fulfilling life and do good.  They started fostering a two month old baby but had to return it to its mother when it was 6 months old and were devastated.  So they bought and renovated a large run down house with seven bedrooms and began fostering long term.   Today, Gap Ministries has 125 employees and its services include foster care, food delivery (600,000lbs/year), culinary school, a mechanic school, transitional housing for students, parent aid services and a community warehouse.
Gap Ministries has received funding from the Rotary Club of Tucson’s Car Show.  For more information and to find out about volunteering and donating, visit the Gap Ministries website.
