This Week
Rotary Moment

            Rotary Moment- Tom Firth

Tom joined Casas Adobes Rotary in 1989 and currently has Senior Active status. He was president in 1998-99 and a three time Paul Harris Fellow.
Tom’s best memories of Rotary were when he and his family hosted youth exchange students. The first was Gianni from Peru, the second was Hanna from Finland and then Margay from Italy.Hanna and Margay especially have become life-long friends; Tom and Susan were recently in Italy and visited Margay who now has two children.Gianni is a teacher in Florida and Hanna is a doctor in Finland. Tom commented how gratifying it has been to see them grow from 15 year old students to adults.

Notes for 03_13_2019

President Jim Bunker opened the meeting.
Emmet Zimberoff led the Pledge of Allegiance
Mike Robbins gave the invocation.

  • Mike Lavor thanked all those who picked up plaques for engraving for the 8th Grade Breakfast.  Charlotte Harris has agreed to host the meeting to evaluate and choose scholarship recipients on April 11th.  Anyone who would like to volunteer to read the applications, let Willis Horak know.
  • Fred Sowerby announced that next week the meeting will be held in the Santa Catalina room at the other end of the building where we are currently meeting.
  • Joe Mahon announced that anyone who would like to join him on Sunday April 7th for the ball game vs. Washington should come early for snacks and refreshments.  The game starts at 1:00 and he will pick up the tickets before the game.  He will pass around a sign-up sheet prior to the 7th.
  • Doug Woodard reminded everyone of the Southern Arizona Day of Peace workshop on Saturday, April 6th.  Sign-up is available at the Rotary District 5500 website.
  • Larry Rumans announced that the raffle drawing on April 18th will be held at the El Charro Café at Oracle Crossing.  There will be a cash bar and free appetizers for members and guests.
Program
Program for 03_13_2019

George Darling introduced Mike Feder the executive director of the Tucson Sugar Skulls. The Skulls are Tucson’s indoor football team and play at the TCC Arena.  Arena football is gaining in popularity as increased attendance shows. The players are from small colleges so are experienced and range in age from 21 to 27.  Four of the Sugar Skulls players are from Tucson.  Games are Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons and generally last about 2 hours and 40 minutes, faster than regular professional football.
Mike stressed that games are more like party events with other fun activities and greater interaction between the players and the fans.  They also raise funds for the Steel Children’s Research Center.
