Announcements:
  • Willis Horak will collect raffle ticket money each week and also collect prizes.
  • Larry Rumens reported that the final OK for the garage sale/bazaar to be held at the Sunrise Drive Elementary School will be approved by the school district.  The date is Saturday, February 16th.   Items can be dropped off at his house, Jim’s house or Doug’s house or he will pick up them up in a truck.
  • Jim would like ideas for a social in March either at an outside venue or a member’s home.
  • Mike Lavor said 8th Grade Honor Program information letters will be going out to the schools next week.
  • Joe Mahon asked members to think about a date for members to attend a Diamondbacks game together.
  • Emmet reported that ADP, Automotive Diesel and Performance where he and Ken Gerhart have work done on their cars has bought an ad for the bulletin and website.
  • Doug relayed an idea from another club which he heard about at the recent Rotary Leadership Institute. The club held a barbeque for “friends” who could include people who have been speakers at club meetings.  It was a way of thanking them and networking.  Jim said the attendance at RLI was the highest in recent years.
Program
Program for 01/30/2019

Two Marana High School Interactors came to give a 4-Way Test speech and one was chosen to represent Casas Adobes at the District 4-Way Test speech contest: Sarah Chambers and Libby Shields.  Judging was based 50% on content and 50% on delivery with Willis Horak, Chris Bijsterveld and Joe Higgins being the judges. The topic was “Be an Inspiration” from the Rotary International theme for 2018-19 while also working in the themes from the Rotary 4-Way Test.  Sarah spoke first about her friend James who is autistic.  Libby spoke about her dad, Jeff Shields.  Unfortunately she wasn’t able to continue and had to sit down.  Everyone was sympathetic and George read her speech to the club. The judges each spoke, Joe saying how nervous he had been in his youth when he had to give speech.  So Sarah will be representing Casas Adobes.

Mike Kloehn reported on his weekend as a counselor at RYLA.Since he has only sons, he learned that teenage girls are more mature than teenage boys. The group did fine without their cell phones and when the phones were returned shortly before they left for home, they all started taking pictures.
Mike also mentioned that he will be going to Alamos, Sonora for the opening of the clinic. Casas Adobes participated in the grant that funded the clinic.
